Summary
A trench was archaeologically excavated on Lansdowne Hill in 1953 (SOU 133). Occupation deposits were found, dated by a few pottery sherds to the 11th or 12th century. They were overlain by layers that formed part of the 12th century mound of Southampton Castle, so are thought to represent occupation of the area prior to the construction of the castle.

Full description
[1] in [2]: Grey "clays" containing occupation material, including charcoal, oyster shell, metallic slag and a few sherds of 11th or 12th century pottery. They were overlain by sterile clay and gravel layers resulting from the build-up of the 12th century castle defences. The deposits are therefore interpreted as pre-dating Southampton Castle.
