Summary
A substantial stone wall was found during a watching brief to the northeast of Castle House, Lansdowne Hill, in 1965 (SOU 608). The wall was thought to be part of the demolished curtain wall of Southampton Castle, on the edge of the castle motte. The precise location of the observed wall is uncertain.

Full description
SOU 608 (watching brief northeast of Castle House, Lansdowne Hill in 1965):
[1]: A stone wall was found. It was about 3 feet wide and built of well-squared blocks which appeared to be Binstead Stone. The wall was considered to be part of the base of the flanking wall, which ran up the castle mound, connecting the castle bailey wall with the castle keep wall. Binstead Stone was used in late 12th century work in the Castle.
IP 20/11/09: The precise location of this observation is uncertain, as the location plan in [1] was drawn up several years after the observation.
