Full description

Moated Site: A rectangular moated site delineated by a ditch 1.5 metres deep, double to the west. Traces of buildings all of the area and in the eastern half of the enclosure a wall of local red sandstone in poor condition survives to a height of circa 2.75 metres. The wall contains a round headed doorway circa 2.4 metres high with portcullis groove and chamfered arch. The east face contains a large fireplace with knife sharpening grooves to one side. <1>

The round headed doorway has fallen (see also PRN 11834). <2>

Mansion: In 1540 Thomas Offley. Who became mayor of London in 1556, purchased the manor and had a large, three-storeyed mansion (PRN 11834) built on the site of the medieval moat. This is the house illustrated by Robert Plot in the late 17th century. It incorporated fragments of the medieval house in the east wing. The later house was abandoned in 1679 and largely demolished in 1749. <3> <4>

Four rectangular fishponds (PRN 50221) are located to the west of the moated enclosure. <5>

The old manor house was practically destroyed in 1749. (SB, 28-Apr-2006) <6>
