    Full description

Section of a probable circular stone structure identified in an evaluation excavation on the north side of Sandford Street in 1999. A surface within it had no significant finds but a layer of surrounding it contained much smithing slag. As this structure was associated with large amounts of slag thought to be from smithing it was interpreted as probably representing part of an iron-working complex. Speed's map of 1610 shows the northern side of Sandford Street to be uninhabited. (JM, 20/2/03) <1>
