Full description

Town Defences: Sections excavated across the rampart (by Robert Sherlock) in the 1960s. <1>

In April (1964) two trenches, each 100ft long, mainly 10ft wide and 15ft apart, were cut at right angles to Marmion Street and therefore at right angles to the conjectural line of the Saxon defences on the east side (of Tamworth). The main feature identified was a truncated bank, of which the outline was clearly visible in the sections of both cuttings. As found, it was about 20ft broad and seemed to have been revetted with stones on the external face. Unfortunately no dating evidence for this bank was discovered but from its size, its location and its orientation it is likely that it represents the rampart of Ethelflaed's defences. (SB, 30-Jan-2015) <2>

The excavations in 1964 were undertaken by Robert Sherlock in two trenches on the corner of Marmion Street and Spinning School Lane. The excavation revelaed a truncated bank running north to south, although no dating evidence was recovered. (SB, 02-Feb-2015) <3>
