Name:Hagley Moated Manor site, Rugeley

Summary

An island in the park at Rugeley, which is said to be the probable mutilated remains of moated site which was the Manorial seat of the de Piuz family until the late 13th century. The house on the site is said to have burnt down at some time before 1388, but later rebuilt as a timber framed house with (amongst other rooms) a hall, chapel and brewery.

    Full description

    MOATED SITE: AN ISLAND IN THE PARK AT RUGELEY IS PROBABLY THE MUTILATED REMAINS OF THE MANORIAL SEAT OF THE DE PIUZ FAMILY. THE DE PIUZ FAMILY OCCUPIED THE SITE UNTIL CIRCA 1298, AND THEN THE THOMERHORNS TOOK IT OVER. THE HOUSE WAS BURNT DOWN SOME TIME BEFORE 1388, WHEN IT WAS REBUILT. SIR THOMAS BUILT A TIMBER FRAMED HOUSE OUT OF 100 OAKS, INCLUDING A HALL, 4 CHAMBERS, A CHAPEL, A KITCHEN, TWO GRANGES, A STABLE, AN OX-STALL, A BREWERY AND A GATEHOUSE WITH A DRAWBRIDGE. <1>
