    Full description

MANSION. BUILT BY SIR RICHARD WESTON, BARON OF EXCHEQUER, POSSIBLY ON OR NEAR THE SITE OF AN EARLIER HOUSE. LARGELY DEMOLISHED IN 1927, LEAVING ONLY A FAIRLY MODERN PART. <1>

(SB, 07-Dec-2005) The house was constructed by Richard Weston around the mid 17th century, and in 1666 the house on this site is recorded as being taxable for 15 hearths. The house was remodelled and extended by Assheton Curzon towards the end of the 18th century. Curzon was also responsible for improving the grounds of the hall, planting shrubberies and building the high wall around the park. Further alterations were made to the house in the early 19th century. In circa 1932 a large part of the building was demolished leaving only the central portion containing the kitchen and service quarters of the 18th century mansion. Alterations made to the surviving structure included the construction of an entrance porch with stone columns brought from Abbots Bromley. <2>

The majority of the hall was demolished in 1932 and the remainder was demolished in the 1980s (DAL 15/02/2010) <3>
