GARDEN FEATURE. SYSTEM OF UNDERGROUND MANMADE CAVES, FORMING A GARDEN GROTTO WHICH IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN LINKED BY TUNNEL TO HAGLEY HALL (PRN 01881). <1> <2> <3>
It has been suggested that the caves were cut by colliery owner William Harrison to provide work for unemployed miners. The layout of the largest of the chambers, with a niche and pedestal at one end, has led to suggestions that it may have been used as a chapel. (SB, 06-Dec-2005) <4>
