Full description

Keep: A stone keep built (or re-built) by Ralph, Earl of Stafford, in circa 1348. Some medieval core work may remain on the motte. <1>

A castle built in 1348 by Ralph, Baron of Stafford, on the site of an earlier motte and bailey castle. <2>

In 1348 a rectangular tower with five polygonal turrets was built on the summit of a mound at Stafford. <3>

The main accommodation was in the hall and towers. <4>

Folly: The keep of Stafford Castle was rebuilt as a Gothic looking mansion. Work commenced in 1817 but was never completed. The keep was partly demolished in 1963 as it was considered unsafe. <not sourced>

The remains of a rectangular keep with four polygonal corner towers and one in the long side. This was the baronial castle of Stafford, built soon after the conquest by Robert de Stafford or one of his successors. Probably demolished by Henry II in the Mid 12th century. In 1348 Ralph de Stafford recived a licence to crenellate his manor having, in 1347, mande an agreement for a building with Banastre, a master mason. The castle remained in the hands of the Stafford family throughout the middle ages. <5>
