Summary

A former landscape park around Hagley Hall, the extent of which can be identified from the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey 6 inch maps (1902). The grounds were improved in the 18th century by Assheton Curzon, although may have originally been established in the mid 17th century or later. Since the 1930s have been encroached upon by modern housing developments.

    Landscape Park: A landscaped area around Hagley Hall. <1>

    Most of the former landscaped area is now covered by two schools and playing fields, with housing around the edge. <2>

    Evidence of landscaping around the approach to the bridge at High Fall was identified during a watching brief associated with a new pipeline through the former grounds of Hagley Hall Park. (SB, 07-Dec-2005) <3>

    Improvements were made to the grounds in the 18th century by Assheton Curzon (who was responsible for remodelling and extending the house). The improvements including the planting of shrubberies and the construction of a high wall around the park. Since the 1930s successive building schemes have encroached on the grounds. The original house at Hagley is said to have been built in the mid 17th century by Sit Richard Weston, at which time it was known as Bank Top. (SB, 7-Dec-2005) <4>
