Summary

The scheduled remains of Biddulph Old Hall, a mansion house of late 16th century date. The house was mostly destroyed by Cromwell in 1643 (during the civil war), although a small part survived to be incorporated into the listed 17th century farmhouse (Primary Record Number 06009) which now on the site.

Full description

MANOR HOUSE. RUINED ELIZABETHAN MANSION, BUILT CIRCA 1580. BESIEGED IN 1644 AND SUBSEQUENTLY DESTROYED. STANDING RUINS. HOUSE HAD AN INNER COURTYARD. THE S (ENTRANCE) RANGE WAS SYMMETRICAL WITH ARCHWAY WITH TAPERED PILASTERS, DATED 1588 OR 1589. A WINDOW WITH TAPERING PILASTERS LEFT AND RIGHT, AND FIVE-EIGHTHS BAY WINDOWS IN THE END BAYS. THE KITCHEN IS RECOGNISABLE BY A HUGE FIREPLACE. HALL WAS PROBABLY IN THE N RANGE. HIGH TOWER WITH OGEE CAPS NO DOUBT CONTAINED STAIR. <1>

CIRCA 1588. AN HISTORIC MANSION DESTROYED DURING CIVIL WAR AND NOW IN RUINS EXCEPT FOR A SMALL PORTION CONVERTED INTO A DWELLING. <2>

BUILDING COMMENCED CIRCA 1560, PANEL IN S ENTRANCE DATED 1580. SOME OF N RANGE MASONRY OBVIOUSLY C17. CHURCH. CHAPEL SITE SUPPOSEDLY IN NE ANGLE. BUILT BY FRANCIS BIDDULPH AT END OF C16. CIRCA 1730 A FARMHOUSE (PRN 06009) BUILT FROM DEBRIS AND ATTACHED TO N SIDE. ON RIGHT OF MAIN ENTRANCE IS DATE 1558. <3>
