DEERPARK: IN 1223 HENRY III GAVE HENRY DE AUDLEY 12 HINDS TO STOCK HIS PARK ADJACENT TO HEIGHLEY CASTLE. CASTLE: CASTLE BUILT ON A NATURAL HILL AND SURROUNDED BY A VAST ROCK CUT MOAT CIRCA 9M DEEP AND 15M WIDE ON THE TWO ACCESSIBLE SIDES. <1>

ELONGATED ENCLOSURE WITH CURTAIN WALL. ONLY ONE SECTION OF THE WALL STANDS TO SOME HEIGHT. ON LOWER, S END OF THE PLATFORM IS A STRONG RETAINING WALL, AND A 3M FRAGMENT POSSIBLY OF A TOWER. THE ENTRANCE WAS PROBABLY ON THE W FACE WHERE THERE ARE APPARENT REMAINS OF ANOTHER TOWER. BUILT IN RED SANDSTONE. REMAINS OF C13 ARCADING ON ONE WALL. THERE IS AN ANCIENT WELL ON THE SITE. <2>

THE CASTLE WAS PROBABLY BUILT CIRCA 1223, WHEN HENRY III GAVE HENRY DE AUDLEY 12 HINDS TO STOCK HIS PARK ADJACENT TO THE CASTLE. THE CASTLE WAS PROBABLY NOT MAINTAINED IN GOOD CONDITION AS RETURNS FROM 1299, 1308 AND 1316 SHOW. DEMOLISHED BY PARLIAMENTARIANS IN 1644 TO PREVENT ITS USE BY ROYALISTS. <3>

PEAR SHAPED BAILEY. GATEHOUSE MAY HAVE BEEN AT N END OF W SIDE OF BAILEY NEAR CAUSEWAY ACROSS MOAT. REMAINS OF TWO BUILDINGS VISIBLE WITHIN BAILEY, ONE WITH RESPOND FOR A VAULTED ROOF. THE KEEP WAS PROBABLY AT THE N END OF THE BAILEY. <4> <5> <6>
