    Full description

Moated Site: A rectangular moated site, dry but in good condition. <1>

Thought to have been the seat of the De Yoxalls until the 14th century. The moat island is occupied by a19th century house and its associated gardens. <2>

The moat comprises of a platform measuring 75 metres (east-west) by circa 64 metres (north-south), with an impressively deep ditch on the north and east sides and a millpond to the west (with an earth revetment separating the millpond from the river). The moat has a massive internal bank on the north and east sides, although this bank has been partially disturbed by an air-raid shelter. Near the house the platform has been levelled down to form a tennis court. Building material and stone foundations have been identified in the garden of the existing house. Ridge and furrow has been identified in the field on the north-west side of the moat. (SB, 23-Mar-2006) <3>

A homestead moat at Yoxall, near the mill stream, of quadrant form and measuring 300 ft by 110 ft. Three sides of the rectangular moat survive dry and in fairly good condition. There is a large inner bank on the eastern arm and on the eastern part of the north arm. This was the site of the ancient mansion of the de Yoxall family during the time of Henry I to Edward II; the remains of the moat were associated with a mill dam to the west side.
