    Full Description

<1> This section of road corresponds to Margary number 28a and 28b.

Roman road following the original line of military penetration from Lincoln towards York. This section of road joins up a number of known Roman forts; namely Rossington, Doncaster, Burghwallis and Castleford (West Yorks).

The road enters South Yorkshire in the South East at Bawtry and travels north-west through Adwick Le Street. The stretch of this route travelling through Adwick Le Street is known as the Roman Ridge Roman Road and has Scheduled Monument Status (SM1179a/b). In addition to this it has recently been the subject of a detailed Topographical Survey (WYAS 2009; Report No. 1956). According to the survey, the road appeared to cut through a rich landscape of Iron Age /Romano- British settlement features, and this may have been part of a deliberate dominance policy by the invading Romans.

<2> Topographic and photographic survey of part of route carried out in 2009. Areas of ridge (agger) identified.

Yorkshire Water granted permission for minor works, see backup file.

<3,4> Two sections were put through the road at Redhouse, Adwick-le-Street. In both sections only modern surfaces were recorded, the Roman surface presumably being worn away when ther route was open to vehicular traffic during the 20th century. Details of the Roman raised agger and original ground preparation were recorded.
