  • Full Description

<1> There is evidence that the Earl of Holderness employed Capability Brown at four sites, even though no entries relating to these are recorded in Brown's account book. The Earl first employed Brown in Yorkshire at Aston Hall, his seat outside Sheffield. Here the old hall was demolished in the 1760s and a new one built to the designs of John Carr (see PIN 2305/01). Work on the landscape was concurrent with the rebuilding of the hall; formal gardens were replaced with a lawn that swept up to the house, with a ha-ha to keep stock out of the pleasure grounds without interrupting the view, fish ponds were adapted to create lakes, and clumps and plantations were used to define and embelish the parkland.

[Extent of park shown on GIS derived from the extent shown on the 1st edition 6" OS map, published 1854/5 - the full extent of the 18th century designed landscape would need further rersearch. DJS 05-07-18]
