    Full Description

<1> The site of the medieval manor of the Morton family, referenced from the 13th century onwards. The inner enclosure set within the outer is a moat form unique in the county, suggesting some pretensions to defence.
The inner enclosure, in plan a parallelogram of c.35 m each side, is set within a rectangular outer enclosure c.100 m by 70 m. The inner moat still holds water, and is enlarged at its SW corner into a pond. The inner moat has a counterscarp on the west, south and east and the outer has an inner bank on the same three sides. The outer moat is not shown on the north side on the O.S. - it is present, but only as a slight ditch. The ground on this side rises slightly.
The whole site is now in the middle of a forestry plantation, with modern drainage ditches utilising the outer moat. Large fish-pond 400 m. to the N.

Despite damage from tree roots, much stratigraphy probably remains on the inner island. A site of considerable importance.
