    <1> <2> Thirty-nine Roman pottery kilns were discovered during the construction of a housing estate between the Great North Road between 1953 and 1957. All the kilns are now covered by the housing estate, and there are no visible remains. A Roman well (see PIN 01814/02) and an iron smelting site were also noted.

    <4> Cantley Kilns north group is comprised as follows:
    Kilns 1, 2 and 3 (Lewyns Drive), Kiln 1 is undated and produced greyware; kiln 2 is dated from 135 AD to the late 2nd century and produced mortaria and imitation Samian; kiln 3 is mid/late 2nd century.
    Kilns 15 and 16 (Symes Gardens), produced greyware.
    Kiln 18 (between Symes Gardens and Aldesworth Road), produced greywares.

    <6> A Pottery Report for kilns 9-25 was written by S.M. Creegan and published in 1956.
