  • Full Description

<1> "The Blaxton group of kilns represents a south-eastward extension of the widespread Roman Kiln complex of Cantley, Branton, Rossington Bridge and West Bessacarr which has been investigated since 1953…
Material from a total of twelve features was recovered, but of these, the positions of only five were precisely recorded."
Feature 1: Kiln stoke hole (partially recorded)
Feature 2: Kiln stoke hole (inferred)
Feature 3: Kiln assemblage (kiln destroyed before recording)
Feature 4: Kiln assemblage (kiln destroyed before recording)
Feature 5: Base of stoke hole (partially destroyed before recording)
Feature 6: Two adjacent kilns, 6 and 6S (recorded)
Feature 7: Kiln assemblage (kiln destroyed before recording)
Feature 8: Kiln stoke hole (partially destroyed before recording)
Feature 9: Kiln stoke hole (inferred)
Feature 10: Kiln assemblage (kiln destroyed before recording)
Feature 11: Kiln assemblage (kiln destroyed before recording)
Feature 12: Well or deep pit

The kilns probably extend to the south under Mosham Road, east into Mosham Wood

A range in date [for the kilns] of c160-250, with an emphasis towards the centre of this period would seem most acceptable, although the dating may have to be revised in the light of detailed examination of material from unpublished kilns and from the fort and vicus at Doncaster. The material, including wasters, from pit feature BL.12, belonging to the fourth century suggests that the remains of later kilns exist or have been destroyed in the area. [Further information]
