The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

<1> Description printed on OS map - found AD 1924
W E Harris's feature no 1 in summary of work on Thatcham Newtown <2>. (First feature excavated)

In 1924, WE Harris undertook the first of several excavations of the Romano-British settlement at Thatcham Newtown <3>. The first excavation uncovered a small pit dug into a layer of gravel and sealed with a layer of soft, black earth, 18 inches thick. The soil was sieved and found to contain fragments of pottery, building stone, tiles, burnt wood, large teeth, iron nails and several pieces of bronze, including five coins.

The pit is marked on the Fourth Edition OS map of 1933 as 'Roman Pottery & Coins found A.D. 1924' <1>.
