The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

The Ordnance Survey Drawing of 1817 <1> shows at least eight apparent barrows on Brimpton Common including one at SU 5696 6294. These Borson or Baughurst barrows were later named with letters of the alphabet, and this one was called A. It is a bell barrow and one of the largest of the group, although situated some distance to the northwest of the other barrows, on the north side of Brimpton Common. It is probably one of the two barrows which were opened in the late 19th century by Canon Greenwell and Walter Money 'on either side of the road leading to Silchester' <3>, although no interments were found.

A 25" survey was made of barrows A, B, C, D, E and F in the 1960s <6>. Barrows A to F were scheduled by 1978 under the old county number 6, hence they were also referred to as 6A, 6B, etc.

The barrow's earthworks are well illustrated in LiDAR data modelling <9>.
