The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Site not well documented - letter in WB Museum information file from Paul Cannon (prior to his appointment as Assistant Curator) telling Tony Higgott (newly appointed Curator) about development taking place on site of old doctor's surgery, on corner of Pelican Lane and London Road, August 1980. TH replied that he would arrange for someone to watch while developers started work. WB Museum has a tray of finds in its stores from a pit that was revealed. Finds include a bottle, ceramic material, clay pipes and bone - all dated as post-medieval - collected 3/10/1980?.

The Museum Accession Register <1> lists sherds, win bottle fragments, clay pipes and some bones from a site adjoining the rear of the old 'Pelican Inn' which was being developed for offices. Some items were excavated from a cesspit and others collected by site workers and the Museum curator.
