The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Speen Grange or The Grange is a Grade II listed house <1>, of many phases, including a timber-framed cottage extended in the 18th century <2>. It was used by Speen's clergy, possibly linked with the Bishops of Salisbury?, although it does not appear to have been the original parsonage which was at Speen House, c 300m to the west. The Grange is marked as a Vicarage from the First Edition Ordnance Survey <3> up to the 5th Epoch <4> and was the home of the Victorian vicar of Speen, Rev Majendie.

The owners from 1990s-2002 described 3 main phases of the house (although there have been many alterations and additions): Jacobean, Queen Anne and Georgian. The latest and grandest extension was in grey brick with a slate roof, two reception rooms linked by a double height oval entrance hall with a curved staircase.

The double gables of the 'Queen Anne' phase are probably represented in the drawing of this house on the 1729 map of Speen Manor <5>.
