The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Wheatlands Farmhouse is a Grade II listed house of mid 17th and 20th century date. It is of brick and timber framing with brick nogging and has an old tile roof with half hip to the north <1>.

This building was reported to have been used as a place of shelter during the First Battle of Newbury, where wounded soldiers of both sides were apparently taken; Money describes this as the old farm house at Enborne, an 'old-fashioned gabled building, apparently little changed since the time of the battle' <4> and 'a picturesque old house.. and since the First Battle has always been known as "The Hospital"'<5>.
