The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Human remains, brooch and beads, probably part of Saxon cemetery, found in 1893

Monument Type(s):

  • INHUMATION (Early Medieval/Dark Age - 410 AD to 1065 AD)

Full Description

A tenant of East Shefford (or some children?) found what was probably another grave of the Saxon cemetery in 1893. A skull, a few beads and possibly also a saucer brooch were removed to Reading museum. The bones were analysed as those of a woman of about 45, and the body lay east-west at a depth of only 2 feet <2><5><6>.

The exact location of this find is not known, but its GIS point has been entered as close to the Saxon cemetery as marked on early OS maps.
