The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our
online HER enquiry form.

Summary
Earthwork running obliquely across Wash Common, suggested by Walter Money to be the remains of a Royalist battery erected during the First Battle of Newbury
Monument Type(s):
- FIELDWORK? (17th century to Late 19th century - 1643 AD? to 1900 AD?)
Full Description
Money's plan of the First Battle of Newbury shows a linear earthwork running from the position of the Gun Public House to a point southeast of the tumuli. He wrote in the 1880s that remains of this still existed, and he interpreted it as a 'roughly raised battery' for the King's heavy guns <1>. No sign of the feature appears on modern OS maps, although a field boundary near the barrow cemetery on the 1st edition map could correlate with the supposed line. The area is now mainly housing.
The GIS line for this monument is based approximately on Money's drawing.
