The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our

Summary
Documentary references to a medieval chapel although its exact location is unknown
Monument Type(s):
- CHAPEL (13th century to 16th century - 1255 AD to 1548 AD)
Full Description
The Victoria County History <1> notes that a chapel was attached to the manor of Wokefield in 1255, and suggests that it might have been near the manor house. By the 16th century, it appears that divine service was not being celebrated in the chapel of All Saints, and by 1548 the chantry returns described the chapel as being without lands, rent or services. The site of the chapel was unknown, but a tradition suggested that it stood on the green between Wokefield and Oakfield Lodges. A GIS point has therefore been entered in this conjectural location.
