The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

This site is designated as being of national importance and is afforded additional protection. Consult West Berkshire Council's Archaeology team if more information or advice is needed.

Full Description

This farm is recorded on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map <1> as noted during a 2005 survey of West Berkshire's historic farmsteads <2>. Its listed farmhouse and agricultural buildings are described as 18th century in date.

A brief record of the history of the farmstead was produced in connection with a planning application for the conversion of an unlisted barn to residential use <4><5>. An oblique aerial image probably from the mid 20th century showed the complex; as well as the farmhouse there were four barns, a wagon shed, hayrick yard, chicken yard and sties. It was considered that one of the barns had been constructed in 1790. The building to be converted had been a stable with hayloft over, but had been altered for grain storage in the 1950s to 1960s.
