The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

An evaluation in 1997 uncovered the upper timbers of a boat within the infilled canal basin. It was suggested that this may have been the steam ship 'Defiance' which was sunk on 17th January 1894 when a chain of a crane broke whilst loading a boiler on board <1>. However the canal basin continued in use for some 30 years after this incident, and it is also possible that a submerged wreck would not have been left against the basin's revetments as boats would have continued to berth there <2>.

The wreck was only partially excavated, exposing the gunwales. These timbers were fitted to hull planking and the joints were caulked with pitch. The boat was 2.65m wide. Waste material overlaid it and filled the basin.
