The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Documentary reference to a fulling mill, but no clear evidence of its location

Monument Type(s):

  • FULLING MILL (15th century to 17th century - 1401 AD? to 1700 AD?)

Full Description

Godwin's Mill, Speen was one of several fulling mills in Berkshire owned, leased or used by Reading and Newbury clothiers <1>. It is uncertain from this source where the mill was: there are several other mills within the parish including one at Woodspeen (MWB6227) although this latter mill does not appear to have had the name Godwin's. Possibly the mill was on the Kennet rather than the river Lambourn.

A GIS point has been put on the Kennet near the 19th century Weir Cottage shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <3>, though this is entirely conjectural.
