The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

This site is designated as being of national importance and is afforded additional protection. Consult West Berkshire Council's Archaeology team if more information or advice is needed.

Full Description

The description for the Registered Park of Donnington Grove <1> notes that its main entrance lies at the southeast corner of the park adjacent to Grove Road. A 'two-storey, whitewashed brick lodge' stands east of brick gate piers with stone finials which support iron gates. The lodge and gates have not been listed.

The lodge is shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <2>; it may also be represented on the earlier Ordnance Survey Drawing <3>. It is presumed to date from the period when Donnington Grove park was created (late 18th century) or slightly later. The park was extended southwards beyond the river Lambourn after 1783 <1>. It was named as Lambourn Lodge on the 5th Epoch OS mapping <4>. Two other dwellings within the park, named Pink Lodge and White Lodge, lie to the north.
