The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

This site is designated as being of national importance and is afforded additional protection. Consult West Berkshire Council's Archaeology team if more information or advice is needed.

Full Description

The description for the Registered Park of Donnington Grove <1> notes that a second drive approaches the house from Donnington village, with the entrance marked by White Lodge, 'a two-storey, whitewashed brick lodge'. This lodge has not been listed.

Unlike Pink Lodge to the west and Lambourn Lodge to the south, White Lodge is not shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <2> but first appears on the 1899 Second Epoch OS map <3>. The other lodges may be of late 18th or early 19th century date, but this building presumably fulfilled a later need for controlling access to Donnington Grove park from the village.

White Lodge is of painted brick with a tile roof. There is a dentilated brick band just below the roof line, including on the gable walls.
