The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Former location of a railway goods shed from the mid 19th to the late 20th century

Monument Type(s):

  • GOODS SHED (Victorian to Late 20th century - 1848 AD to 1974 AD)

Full Description

Newbury goods shed is shown on the First epoch OS map of 1881 <1> and following historic mapping up to and including the Fifth epoch OS map of 1969 <2>. The goods shed, believed to be the original building dating to 1848, was demolished in 1974 <3>. An aerial photograph from 1928 <5> shows the goods yard and goods shed in the bottom right.

To the north of the goods yard were gravel deposits, regularly dug for ballast in the 19th century. A Roman cemetery was discovered in 1856, and prehistoric animal remains were also found several years later.
