Summary

Flint lined Roman well, the upper part of which was broken up when working out gravel in 1936, though the lower part was observed by Harris

Full Description

A flint lined well was discovered during gravel working and its upper part broken up in 1936. Harris <1> observed the lower part, about 5 feet below the Roman sturface. The well was square in shape with an internal diameter of 30 inches. Unlike other Roman wells found at Thatcham Newtown this feature was not marked on historic Ordnance Survey mapping <2>.
