The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Nos 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 Aldwych Cottages in Castle Lane, Donnington, were formerly listed at Grade III <1> prior to the 1980s review of listed buildings. A row of seven cottages is depicted on historic Ordnance Survey mapping <2> up until the 5th Epoch <3>, when the dwellings are numbered from 1 to 7; presumably the end terrace cottages were of a different character or perhaps later additions to the central row of five. These were described as probably 18th century, timber-framed and brick with a tiled roof and brick stacks.

All of the original Aldwych Cottages were demolished and replaced by a terrace of six brick houses after 1968.

West Berkshire Museum has a photograph showing Aldwych Cottages in the mid 20th century <4>.
