The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

The Railway Arms on Station Road in Theale is marked on the First Edition OS map of 1879 <1> and on later historic mapping up to the Fifth edition of 1965. From the early to mid 20th century it is also named as Railway Hotel <3> <4>. Historical pub research indicates that the Railway Arms was in operation in 1863 (from Dutton's directory) <2>. It lay 150m to the north of Theale Station, and also had a small gas works to its north.

The public house was demolished following an application in 1998 <5>, and its site developed for two two-storey office blocks, part of a grouping named Theale House, visible in a 1999 aerial photograph <6>.
