Full Description
LINE OF ROAD THROUGH THATCHAM CONFIRMED BY EXCAVATION AND EXTENDED BY PROBING BY W E HARRIS, WHO CONTENDS THATCHAM IS SPINAE. EXTENSIVE ROMAN SETTLEMENT UNDER THATCHAM STRUNG OUT IN A LINEAR FASHION SEEMS TO INDICATE IS BASED ON THE ROAD.
A section drawing was made of the road in 1933, although it is reproduced at a very small scale in the Transactions <1>. Harris noted the existence of a hard macadamised surface c 2 inches thick and cambered at various points in Thatcham Newtown <2>. He also found a ditch on the south side, north of the extant Bath Road.
