The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Chamberhouse Mill was formerly listed at Grade III prior to the 1980s review of listed buildings <1>. It was described as probably of early 19th century date, brick with a slated and tiled roof. The mill and house formed an L shape <1>.

A desk-based assessment carried out a map regression analysis and assessment <2>. Chamberhouse Mill was worked occasionally as late as c1964, but closed after the owner's death in 1965, and the mill and millhouse complex were partly demolished and partly restored for new housing between c1968 and c1977. The two waterwheels and some of the mill's original workings survive inside the residential complex (pers comm 2013).
