The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Seven lead shot were found during a metal detection survey in 2011 on land to the west of Wash Common Farm, within the Registered Battlefield boundary of the First Battle of Newbury (1643). The lead shot showed varying degrees of distortion suggesting that they had been fired during military activity in the immediate vicinity. The shot bores appear consistent with both muskets and carbines, the latter being represented by five out of the seven. The report suggested that they possibly confirmed the historical evidence for cavalry activity within the Wash Common area <1>.

Also recovered were two coins probably dating to the 18th century, one lead object (possibly sheet offcut), one livery button and one copper alloy pinhead.
