The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our

Full Description
Newbury Cattle Market is shown on the OS First Edition map of 1880 <1> and later historic mapping up to the Fifth edition of 1967 <2>. It was designed by James Money <3> and was opened in 1873 by local resident Lord Carnarvon; the facility was closed in 1969 and replaced by a bus station. Money noted that 'the opening ceremony was an occasion of considerable festivity' <7> and that the cost of the new cattle market was about £5000, but that the accommodation afforded to agriculturists and dealers was much appreciated.
The earliest mapping of the cattle market <1> delineates a narrow trapezoidal strip on the south side of the east-west Market Street. A row of about 20 small buildings has an office in the centre, and urinals are marked on either side of the gated entrance. Elsewhere there are many rows of pens. The market had expanded southwards by 1934 <4> with at least two large new buildings and a different configuration of pens.
West Berkshire Museum has photographs showing the Cattle Market and Market Street in the 1960s <5>. An oblique aerial photograph from 1948 <6> shows the market with several roofed buildings surrounded by pens, overlooked by the houses in Highfield Avenue and on the north side of Market Street. Lorries and vans are parked around the pens where some stock may be present.
