The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Area of land south of the River Kennet documented as a wharf in the 19th and early 20th centuries but developed as a police station by the 1960s

Monument Type(s):

  • RIVER WHARF (Late 19th century - 1880 AD (pre) to 1880 AD (pre))

Full Description

The name of Greenham Wharf is marked on the south bank of the River Kennet, where it had been canalised as the Kennet and Avon Canal, immediately east of Newbury though lying within Thatcham parish before the 19th century. A variety of buildings, probably stores and workshops were located around the rectangular open space of the wharf; at the south side was 'Wharf House'. There was another Wharf House in Newbury.

Berry notes that there would have been multiple wharves along the Navigation and later the Kennet and Avon Canal when it was being used commercially: there were 18 in Newbury and its surrounding area <2>. Greenham Wharf was separated from Newbury's Corn Wharf by an arrangement of canal basins, later filled in. This division however was replicated in the mid 20th century by the construction of the north-south A339 dual carriageway, and the land of Greenham Wharf was then used for the construction of Newbury Police Station and Magistrates Court <3>.
