The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Unlisted early 20th century lodge, designed by Leonard Stokes, on the eastern approach to the country house in Oakfield Park

Monument Type(s):

Full Description

A gate lodge is first mapped on the 3rd Epoch Ordnance Survey of 1911-12 on an eastern approach to Oakfield, a country house in its own designed landscape. No lodge seems to have previously existed in this location though an older building in the park, West Lodge, is of likely late 19th century origins. New Lodge, later called East Lodge, appears to have been designed by architect Leonard Stokes; a drawing by him of 'Lodge, Oakfield, Mortimer'<2> is almost identical to the extant building in the 21st century. It is a one and a half storey building with white rendered walls and a clay tiled roof. It has a large chimney with a row of five chimney pots; the roof runs down to a covered porch supported by posts.
