The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Full Description
A footbridge is drawn on historic Ordnance Survey mapping crossing a tributary of the river Lambourn at the western end of Donnington Grove <1><2>. A site visit <3> indicated it was a brick built single Roman arch bridge, with the remains of flint head walls along with brick wings extending eastwards downstream. The bricks are handmade with dimensions of 8 ½” x 4 ½” x 2 ½” <3>. This size, together with the flint material, suggests the bridge was associated with the aesthetics of the 18th century designed landscape. However, it also would have had a functional role, being adjacent to a sluice on the stream, and would have allowed access to meadows on either side of the channel.
