The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Late 19th century estate cottage within curtilage of Grade II* listed 18th century country house

Monument Type(s):

Full Description

A L-shaped building is first depicted on the Second Epoch Ordnance Survey mapping <2>, at the western end of a long enclosed area around the mansion of Wokefield Park. To the east of mansion was a probable estate farm, but on the west side was a walled garden with many small outbuildings, glasshouses and an icehouse. The L-shaped building, later called Ivy Cottage, seems likely to have been constructed as accommodation for a head gardener or other manager of workers on the estate.
It is not listed in its own right but may be considered to be within the curtilage of the Grade II* listed country house.
