The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our

Full Description
The Silchester Iron Age Environs mapping project <1> recorded a possible medieval or post medieval park boundary or trackway, visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs <2> within Wokefield Park. The boundary is formed of a curvilinear bank with a ditch on part of its eastern side. It extends from SU 67624 65733 to SU 67809 65410, a total distance of approximately 400 m. This feature may be associated with the documented medieval deer park <3>; however a ditch would usually be on the inside of a deer enclosure, suggesting that the park was to the east of this curving boundary. A post medieval trackway appears to cut through the boundary bank (NRHE 1601640).
The area was redeveloped as a golf course at the end of the 20th century <4>, and no cropmark can be seen in later aerial images <5>.
