The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

The Silchester Iron Age Environs mapping project <1> recorded two post medieval trackways or field boundaries visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1950s <2> within Wokefield Park. The field boundaries or trackways are formed of linear banks orientated roughly north-south and measuring 245 m and 217 m in length, positioned up to 240 m apart. They may relate to divisions within the former parkland around 18th and 19th century Wokefield Park, though no such alignment is visible on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <3>. However the eastern bank appears to be represented as a field boundary on the 5th Epoch OS <4>.

The area was redeveloped as a golf course at the end of the 20th century <5>, although the eastern straight former field boundary may be partly visible in 21st century LiDAR imagery <6>.
