The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. Full Description

Yattendon village - recorded in Domesday. The church of St Peter and St Paul dates from the 15th century. Other interesting features include the moated site and several 15th -16th century listed buildings. For a general discussion of the village see Mee's Berkshire <1>.

Astill lists Yattendon as a village with a market in the medieval period - 1258, granted by Peter de Yattendon <2>; there are also a couple of documentary references to medieval fairs <7><13>.

Yattendon was closely associated with the architect Alfred Waterhouse who bought the manor in 1876 <11>. He built a house at Yattendon Court (later rebuilt) as well as many other buildings in the estate village. His wife set up an Arts and Crafts guild (the Yattendon Metalworking Class) making copper items in the late 19th century.

The first Lord Iliffe acquired several smaller estates between 1925 and 1940, resulting in the business known as the Yattendon Estate; this retains ownership of most of the village in the early 21st century <15>.
