Summary

Scheduled Monument and Grade II listed lock built between 1718 and 1723 along the Kennet Navigation, altered and rebuilt several times, with scalloped brickwork retaining turf sides

Full Description

SM 195. ORIGINALLY BUILT BETWEEN 1718 AND 1723. WIDENED IN 1767 TO TAKE NEWBURY BARGE. REBUILT 1831 ON A NARROWER WIDTH. WAS ORIGINALLY TURFSIDE, WITH RAIL AND SLEEPER SIDES ADDED POST GWR. RAIL AND SLEEPER REPLACED WITH 11 BAY SCALLOPED BRICKWORK (TURF SIDES RETAINED BEHIND) 1978
ONE OF 13 LOCKS ON THE KENNET NAVIGATION SECTION OF THE KENNET AND AVON CANAL. RETAINS TURFSIDES, BUT PLANKING (REPLACED WITH BRICKWORK IN 11 BAYS) FORMS SCALLOPED SIDES. LOCK GATES HAVE BEEN RESTORED. OPEN TO NAVIGATION.

The question over the name 'Shenfield' as opposed to 'Sheffield' for this lock is related to the Ordnance Survey use of Shenfield Mill on the 5th Epoch mapping <11>.

Repair works were also carried out in 2016, with an archaeological survey undertaken <12>.
