Full Description
Heales Lock is named 'Hale's Lock' on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <1>.
ORIGINALLY BUILT BETWEEN 1718 AND 1723 AS A TURF SIDED LOCK. REBUILT IN 1767 TO TAKE NEWBURY BARGES. NARROWED 1831 TO STANDARDISE CANAL. LOCK COMPLETELY REBUILT 1989, BUT SURVIVED AS TURFSIDED WITH GWR RAIL AND SLEEPER SIDES UNTIL RECENTLY. LOCK REBUILT IN 1952.
