Summary

Lock constructed between 1718 and 1723. Widened in 1767 to accommodate the Newbury barges. Rebuilt 1831 on a narrower width standard to the Kennet & Avon Canal.

Full Description

Bull's Lock was constructed between 1718 and 1723 and widened in 1767 to accommodate the Newbury barges. It was rebuilt in 1831 on a narrower width standard to the Kennet & Avon Canal.

It is a brick chamber lock and was restored by K&A Canal Trust volunteers in the 1970s <7>. It was further restored by the Canal & River Trust at the end of 2014.

West Berkshire Museum has photographs showing the lock in the early 20th century, with a lock-keeper's cottage to the side <8>. This dwelling was later demolished.
