Full Description

Listed grade II. Built in Oct 1794 (or 1796?). Brick chamber with stone coping. Two sets of double wooden gates. Top gates have mechanical gate paddle gearing assisted by lever operated ground paddle gearing with single lever on each side of the chamber. Bottom gate with hydraulic paddle gearing. Only example in southern England.

West Berkshire Museum has a set of photographs showing John Gould operating the lock in 1986, and another showing Newbury Lock with Lock Cottage around 1960 <10>.
